This year at Burning Man I offered reiki healing one afternoon, put it in the schedule (3rd down on the right, page 137), and loaded up my massage table for the trip. I expected just a few people to show up, but when I trundled out of the RV at 2:55, our entire camp shade structure was filled with burners! I asked my hammock-dwelling campmate, Kevles, “who are are these people?”, to which he replied, “I dunno… I think its a cult.”
Turns out 40+ people were all there for my reiki! Some thought it was going to be a workshop despite the schedule description. A volunteer called “Bambi” from the crowd offered to start a sign-up sheet, and I decided to shorten sessions to 10-15 minutes to accommodate more people. In the end, I think I got to about 12 people in 2+ hours.
The experience was incredibly gratifying for me as each person was so appreciative of the service, and so clear about the positive impact it had had on them. I would begin with each person by asking what is going on for them physically, emotionally, energetically, and go from there. Some shared feelings of being trapped / claustrophobic, some shared relationship quandries, some had physical ailments, and some just wanted to soak in energy.
At the very end of the sign-up, a woman called Michelle walked up to me and had just arrived. She would be too far down the list at that point to get an appointment. But she had tears in her eyes and pain on her face from being in her tent for 2 days suffering with an intense migraine. I hugged her and told her quietly to return at 6. She did, and I spent 25 or so minutes with her, after which she claimed to have been released from her migraine. The pain had slowly left, and she felt better than she had felt since arriving.
The gratitude expressed by all once they were done really made the offering so worth it for me. I received a benefit greater than I gave, and was truly amazed at the power that hands-on healing, reiki, has on people. I knew it to be true as I’ve felt it myself, but to be able to channel energetic healing and hear from people its impact is a wonderful gift that I look forward to continuing!
